THE SUBSTANCE ISSUE NO. 224

Mother, do you think they'll drop the bomb?

With global politics looking more fractious by the minute, it seems prudent to start kitting yourself out now for the apocalyptic Mad Max future that awaits us all. After all, you may not be needing next year's Autumn-Winter collection in 2003 - you'll need asbestos underpants instead. Sadly, the world of fashion has bee a little slow in catching onto the need for lavishly tailored hazmat suits, and the days when you can pick something up in the high street that can withstand the nuclear apocalypse are still a long way off (when will H&M get their act together?). Luckily then, German designers Acronym - who regularly design the high-end engineered snow-wear for Burton Snowboards (not to be confused with the middle of the road British chain) - have done the job with their new industrial standard enineered coat. Only four of the garments will be available in the UK, arriving in a quasi-military flat-pack with a wealth of software as favoured by the US National Security Agency. The jacket itself is made of ultra-rare Gore-Tex Paclite, is 100 percent waterproof to extreme levels and comes with an engineered military issue bag favoured by the Germal special forces (shame it's not 'our brave boys', but you can't have everything). The fixtures on the bag and the coat are 'tankproof'; this might be the same impukse that makes small boys buy watches that are submersible to 200m taken to ridiculous levels, but you never know when a Panzer's going to mow you down. Suffice to say, this level of quality and appearance doesn't come cheap. With only 120 made (60 in polar white, 60 in black) you won't get change out of £2,500. But it's a small price to pay for surviving the big bang.
